In 1816 David Tilson came to Boston to work at the slaters' trade, entering the service of Robert Wilson and Galbraith. In 1817 he was sent in charge of the firm's work to Halifax, N. S., where the State House or Province Building was roofed by him and his men, besides other large structures. In 1818 he began business on his own account. In the winter of that year he went to Sidney, Me., and taught school, and Mrs. Tilson was one of his pupils. He was then 21 years of age. His educational advantages up to that time must have been very meagre. But he was possessed of a strong, practical mind; was distinguished by his integrity, and became a valued friend and worker in the various organizations of which he was a member. In 1826 he was a prominent member of the Boston Fire Department; a member of the Mechanic's Fire Insurance Co. twenty-five years; secretary of Cambridge Wharf Co. twenty-five years. In 1829 he joined the Mechanic's Charitable Association and the Handal and Hayden Society in 1834. He was proprietor of the slating business since 1818. His son David became partner. After his death the firm was Tilson & Webber. He was known from Maine to California as a business man, precise in all his work. The qualities of manhood which he possessed gave him a high place in the trusts and hearts of those associated with him. He died Dec. 5, 1873, at his home, Crescent Place, Boston. The funeral services were at the Bulfinch Street Church by Rev. Mr. Winckley.
