HENRY MARTIN ROWE, (Holmes6, Benjamin5, John4, Edmund3,
Ephraim2, Edmond1) third son of Orrin Fuller Rowe and Elizabeth P.
(Tilson) Rowe was born Aug. 14, 1839, at Tilson's corner, West Sidney,
Me. His parents moved to Augustus, Me., in 1849; he attended
the grammar and High school of that city. In 1856 he began to
learn the printer's trade of Stevens and James G. Blaine on the Kennebec
Journal, but gave up the business after serving one year, and began
work for his father in the Hotel Cushnoc in Augusta. In 1858
was apprenticed to L. M. Leland to learn the art of gun making. He
left Augusta in 1861, and went to Stonington, Conn., and worked in
the gun factory for Huff Bros. of New York one year, then went to
Providence, R. I., working in the Providence Tool Co. on government
guns. He came to Boston in 1864, working in different shops on
sewing and button hole machines. Was the first person to make a
button hole by machine invented by Mr. Vogal, a Swede. In 1868 engaged
with his brother, B. S. Rowe in the retail shoe trade at 10 Essex
street, and was burned out in 1872; they then located at 19 Kneelland
street, (now 25). In 1875 he bought his brother's interest,
and has continued in the business to the present time, 1911. He was
made a mason in Bethelam Lodge, No. 35 of Augusta, Me., in 1867;
received Chapter Degrees July 1879, in Mt. Vernon R. A. Chapter,
Roxbury, Mass.; charter member of Dorchester, R. A. C., 1893; received
degrees of K. T., Jan. 1882, in Boston Commandery; became
member in Joseph Webb Lodge of A. F. & A. M., 1877; served the
lodge as W. M. in 1887 and 1888.
